Created after the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, 2018, Make Our Schools Safe is dedicated to driving and guiding best practices in school safety.

Our Mission is to empower students and staff to help create and maintain a culture of safety and vigilance in a secure school environment.

Action

Prevention & Preparedness – Understanding and preparing for potential dangers in schools, training for emergencies, and addressing vulnerabilities before incidents occur. A safe school starts with a prepared school.
Observation & Detection – Situational awareness and decision support. Recognizing warning signs, monitoring environments, and identifying threats before they escalate. See something, say something.
Willingness to Act & Communication – Preparedness response training for school leaders, MOSS Clubs, students, and teachers. When seconds count, clear and immediate communication saves lives. Time=Life™
Education – Building knowledge of response protocols and drills. MOSS Clubs are a voice for school safety. Your Voice is Your Power!
Response & Recovery – Responding to and recovering from threats and hazards as trained and planned for. Alyssa’s Law in action — mass notification in a life-threatening emergency situation ensures help arrives without delay. Building campus resiliency — supporting students, staff, and communities in healing and strengthening safety systems after an incident. A resilient school is a safer school.
