The Link Between Mental Health and School Safety

By Meghan Bennett

Mental health issues, when left unaddressed, can manifest in various ways that may compromise a student’s ability to learn and interact positively with peers and teachers.

Research has shown that students who experience mental health challenges—such as anxiety, depression, and trauma—are more likely to face academic struggles, behavioral problems, and even engage in harmful actions that can threaten themselves and/or others.

When schools create an environment that prioritizes mental well-being, students are better equipped to manage stress, build healthy relationships, and develop positive coping strategies. In turn, fostering a safer school environment for everyone.

Reducing the Stigma Around Mental Health

Students may feel shame or fear when they need help with their emotional well-being, and as a result, they might hide their struggles. This not only harms their mental health but also increases the likelihood of crisis situations within schools.

By actively addressing mental health in schools, we can help normalize the conversation and reduce the stigma surrounding it. This opens up opportunities for students to seek help when they need it, whether through counseling, peer support groups, or classroom discussions.

When students feel that their mental health is a valid and important part of their overall safety, they are more likely to take proactive steps to care for themselves and seek help when needed.

Resources for Students

  • Peer support groups and regular check-ins with counselors create a safe space for students to share concerns.
  • Mindfulness practices like meditation and deep breathing can help manage stress and anxiety.
  • Participating in school activities, whether through clubs or sports, helps students feel more connected and supported. Building strong friendships and promoting kindness can create a positive school environment where everyone feels safe and valued.
