MENTAL FITNESS: Empowering Student’s and Breaking the Stigma

A Student’s Guide for a Healthy Mind- Written by Stacey Steinbaum, MSW, LCSW, and Co-Authored Mya Ryan

Breaking the stigma around mental health, I am honored to develop this journal alongside my daughter to help bring real mental health tools into classrooms and Make Our Schools Safe clubs. When we think about keeping students safe, we think about locked doors, security protocols, and emergency drills. These measures matter, but they are only part of the picture. True safety means protecting students from the inside, too. It means nurturing their emotional health, strengthening their sense of self, and giving them the tools to face life with resilience.

Lori and Ilan Alhadeff, founders of Make Our Schools Safe, have always understood this deeper truth. Their mission has been about both physical safety and creating school environments where students feel supported, empowered, and resilient. In honor of their work, we were inspired to introduce A Student’s Guide for a Healthy Mind: A Wellness Journal for Teenagers. This journal was created from a simple but powerful belief: students need more than advice. They need real, practical tools they can use in their everyday lives.

Today’s teenagers are navigating one of the most emotionally demanding times in their lives. Between academic pressure, peer relationships, social media, and the pressure to have everything figured out, many students feel overwhelmed and unsupported. Too often, they are trying to manage it all without a clear roadmap. This journal is that roadmap.

A Student’s Guide for a Healthy Mind walks students through six essential pillars of mental fitness. The journal is built around six core pillars: purpose and vision, identity and self-awareness, self-love and confidence, healthy relationships, emotional regulation, and resilience. Each pillar is designed to strengthen a different part of a student’s inner world and provide skills they can carry with them long after high school.

One of the most important shifts this journal supports is changing how we talk about mental health. When we frame it as mental fitness, we remove stigma and fear. Students begin to see their emotional well-being as something they can build and strengthen, just like physical health. They feel more open, more capable, and more willing to engage. This is where real change begins.

This journal is designed to be used in schools, within MOSS Clubs, in counseling offices, and at home. It meets students where they are, with a tone that is both clinically grounded and relatable. Because creating safe schools is not only about protecting students from external threats. It is about equipping them with the internal strength, awareness, and resilience they need to thrive. This journal carries that mission forward and invites parents, students, and schools to be part of it.

Available on Amazon and the Make Our Schools Safe website, it’s perfect for families looking to support students’ mental health in a meaningful way!
